THE TWO GROOVIN' BLUE XMAS PODCASTS WILL BE JOINED IN THE 2nd WEEK OF JANUARY BY 2 NEW PROGRAMS.

The view from Studio 'B' still looks quite chilly and frightful.
Luckily, most of the WAGRadio programming is produced in the much cozier Studio 'A'.
Look for the last Groovin' Blue show of 2008
PLUS the premiere GB program of 2009 in the first nine days of January.
Among those artists featured in that last-week-of-2008 program will be Elephant Man & Seal plus Lyfe Jennings, Sam Sparro, Shifta feat. Flo Rida, Omarion and from The Comedy Channel's Chocolate News - 'Black Daddy'.
2009's debut show will showcase tunes by Notes To Self feat. Dilated Peoples, B.O.B., Big Caz, Bobby Womack, Rock City and a three tune tribute to recently departed trumpet star Freddie Hubbard.

When Vancouver Rock Radio Bubbled Up From The Underground

Vancouver Sun article re: the birth of Groovin' Blue from Canada.com...

Another pioneer in radio in 1967 was 24-year-old Bill Reiter, who owned Bill & Bob's Record Shop, which sold rhythm-and-blues and soul records in the world's narrowest building at 10 [West] Pender St. in Chinatown. CKLG program director Frank Callaghan asked Reiter to host an experimental program on CKLG-FM, which at the time was playing classical music and wanted to appeal to a younger audience. Reiter called the show Groovin' Blue -- the title of a 1961 jazz album by Curtis Amy and Frank Butler. It was the first of its kind in Canada, playing only black music: the latest R&B, soul, blues, jazz, funk, gospel and salsa.

It first aired in September 1967 on Saturday nights from 6:30 to 8:30. Six months later, when CKLG-FM switched to all-rock, it ran 6-8 p.m, Monday through Saturday. The 100,000-watt signal could be heard by fans in Washington state, recalls Reiter, who says a New Yorker phoned one night to say he'd recently been on a freighter in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, heading to Vancouver from Japan, when he picked up the Groovin' Blue signal. The Big Apple denizen said he couldn't believe anyone in Canada was playing New York conga drum hero Mongo Santamaria, as well as Pucho & his Latin Soul Brothers. Reiter recalls that many recording artists got their first Canadian airplay on the program: Ollie & the Nightingales, Marva Whitney, the Dapps, Sy Risby, the Joe Tex Band, Sly & the Family Stone, the Trials of Jayson Hoover, Freddy Robinson, Mabel John, Oscar Toney Jr., the Raelettes, O'Dell Brown & the Organizers and Melvin Van Peebles.

Groovin' Blue lasted for two years, ending in mid-September 1969. Reiter says the Groovin' Blue format will make its home next February on the Internet via radio station WAGR, which he will co-host with Sunny (Sweet Daddy Fonk) Wong, Al (Mr. Big) Foreman, Buddy Bok & Harry Bok (Chow) and voice-actor Jim Conrad.

Sunny "Sweet Daddy Fonk" Wong and DJZigZag bring the combined listening habits of more than one hundred years to funk up you shui.
The audience drinks from the pool of literally hundreds of thousands of hours spent by "...one old white guy and an elderly Chinese gentleman" listening to New World African Music.
Included in this mix are thousands of hours attending live music venues. Sweet Daddy Fonk and ZigZagZ remember Hank Ballard & The Midnighters' 1959 Seattle Eagles Auditorium performance plus James Brown's San Francisco Cow Palace appearance in 1971. Add to these, the recently seen live performances by D'Angelo, Don Byron, The Mad Professor, Chico Hamilton and Beres Hammond.
The two SoulMateS "Funk Shui" program highlights the music of their favourite artists including Jully Black, Kool & The Gang, The O'Jays, Michael Rose, Donny "Mr. Soul" Gerrard, The Temptations, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Gerald LeVert and Glen Washington - to name a few.

DOUG PARKER - Pianist, Arranger, Band Leader passes in Vancouver, Canada

One of North America's top musicians and a wonderful man, Doug Parker passed December 6th of this year. Big Band leader Harry James said Mr. Parker was "the best piano player I ever had". DJZigZag of WAGRadio's flagship program "Groovin' Blue" worked with this very talented man at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. where Doug was called upon to compose, arrange and conduct for most of the music-variety, comedy and C&W programs in the 1960's and '70's. DJZZ remembered: "What a beautiful guy and as a bonus, an East-Ender who went to Britannia High School. He was that kinda musician who always had a smile and a warm, carefree attitude". ZigZagZ sez he thinks it comes from Doug having spent a lot of time "on the road" where so much could, if you let it, get you down. In the liner notes of the Harry James L.P. "Harry James In Hi-Fi" (according to www.jazzstreetvancouver.ca) Mr. James gives a lauditory big-up to Doug Parker.
A North American Jazz giant is no longer with us.

Back, back, back, back before 'back in the day'

Original Posse member Al "MB" Foreman w/ David Steele (Feldman Chzminsky) at Neptoon Records [Main St. VanCity]. David is now a member of Steel Soul.

Steel Soul, the star-packed VanCity big band is usually gigging every weekend in Vancouver, Canada. So, if you're getting off a ship or train or plane, finding out where Steel Soul is playing would turn out to be a very musically hip place to be.
Band consists of internationally famous musicians; Karen Graves/Sax, Angela Kelman/Vocals, David Sinclair/Guitar, Phil Robertson/Drums, "Sir" Malcolm Aiken/Trumpet, Norm Fisher/Bass, Steve Soucy/Keyboards and the very, very good David "Don't Call Me Kentish" Steele.

WAGRadio Producer/Hosts Harry and Buddy Chow react to the news that their program "Run Da Trak" will be up and running in 2009.

RUN DA TRAK - Coming soon to WAGRadio 180.2 FM / 1802 AM

HARRY and BUDDY CHOW have been brothers for years.
Both are totally into "live" performances.
Gladys Knight & The Pips, Glen Washington and Michael Franti & Spearhead have all recently visited both Canada's Southern British Columbia and North West Washington State USA. And, you know, with the Chow Brothers, if a New World African Musician or Singer had been in the vacinity these two would have been there.
Both Harry Chow and "Funk Shui" co-host Sunny "Sweet Daddy Fonk" Wong annually volunteer for the Coastal Jazz & Blues Society.

Buddy Chow and younger brother Harry will co-host "Run Da Trak" with DJZigZag.
