Oh, YES ! ! B3 ORGAN PLAYER - Mr. TERRY "Fingers" BRADFORD GROOVES OUT WITH "WALK WITH ME, LORD" - - July 23, 2010 - - St. LOUIS, MISSOURI . . .

Mr. TERRY "FINGERS" BRADFORD sounds very much like a WAGRadio favourite tasty B3 master from the past - CHRIS COLUMBO.  Rockin' (literally) the organ, "Fingers" walks his way through this one with the help of DRE BOYD on drums, MARIOLE SANDERS playing bass and guitarist GREG HAYNES.  The joyous congregation at the Friendly Temple in St. Louis, Missouri delights in the music with a more-than-appreciative ear.

Thanks to the JazzWax blog for this one.

THIS Cd COVER for KENNY GARRETT'S "SEEDS FROM THE UNDERGROUND" . . . has to be A FRONTRUNNER for JAZZ ALBUM COVER OF 2012 . . . on Mack Avenue Records

This latest KENNY GARRETT Cd's Art Direction and Design is by Timothy Zach and the photo is by Keith Major.  We here at WAGRadio love the look of this thing - with its clever use of Kente print (African tartan) plus the immediacy of the no-nonsense font incorporated with a deft touch by art director Zach.

The music contained within, with its latin influences and straight ahead style, is one of the best we've heard this year.  Although we wouldn't go so far as to call the Cd this year's most wonderfully fabulous jazz release (some wag will quote this - leaving out "wouldn't") it does have "enuff in the grooves" to warrant a Groovin' Blue Format nod & smile.
The hit choon of this great Cd, for us, is "Wiggins" which will be featured on the soon-to-be-podcast

DJZigZag TELLS US THAT THESE ARE THE TWO BOOKS HE'S READING THIS SUMMER of 2012 . . . SEEMS LIKE HE'S GONE BACK FOR THESE TWO GEMS !

On a recent trip to Bellingham, Washington,  DJZigZag dug out this used 1982 publication "MEMPHIS: A Folk History".  While the book devotes only a few pages to the rich New World African Music history of this Tennessee town built on the Fourth Chickasaw Bluff, it is rich in the lore of the city that in 1923 was declared Murder City, U.S.A.  Thirty years later it was being billed as the Nation's Quietest City.  Mid twentieth century Stax Records with its roster of stars - Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, The MG's (Memphis Group), Rufus Thomas, Sam & Dave, Mabel John etc indelibly mark the city as Soul City, U.S.A. in the minds of the world's Black Music lovers.

DJZZ has also been spurred on by reading "THE ONE: The Life and Music of James Brown" by RJ Smith and the gentle coaxing of Sunny Sweet Daddy Fonk to order and finally begin reading "THE JAMES BROWN READER: 50 Years of Writing About the Godfather of Soul" (2008).  From early writings of Chicago Defender scribes to later musings by writers in Goldmine, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Penthouse and The Montreal Star this collection has added to a more complete understanding of the enigmatic Soul Brother No. One.
