Reiter's Records

REITER RECORD RELICS * BEST OF CHRISTMAS * 1946-1986

From 1954 to 1986 the following were Bill Reiter's favourite Winter-time recordings, as opposed to 'Christmas records' (although most are). The majority of them were taped from vinyl onto taped cassettes and then dubbed and distributed to friends, fellow music lovers and colleagues between 1976 and 1982. Eventually "Havin' A Soulful Xmas" became a set of nine - 90 minute mix tapes.
Because tradition plays such a part in this time of year, you will find it more-than-reflected in the age of some of the recordings.

They're listed here in order of Mr. Reiter's fondness for them;

1. "Please Come Home For Christmas"
- CHARLES BROWN [King] 1960

REITER RECORD RELICS - TOP 200 PLUS - 1955 TO 1960

The list of late-1950's New World African Music that follows will possibly be of interest to those people with a vinyl records jones.
I've always found my attempts to list my most-favourite to least most-favourite records, unexplainable.
I've been compiling these lists since I was twelve years old.
So why the five years - 1955 to 1960?
In '55, at the age of 12, my appreciation for music seemed to coalesce and in 1960 I was getting ready for my life to change after high school. Black music was getting ready to change then too - from Blues and Rhythm 'n' Blues to Soul and Funk. That's as close to two reasons for the five year selection as I can think of.

I listened to 99.9% of the records listed in "REITER RECORD RELICS 1955 - 1960 TOP 200 plus" on or near their original date of release. This is the music that was part of my everyday life.
There are a dozen or so revisionist exceptions in the complete list of eight hundred plus tunes.
For instance;
"Johnnie's House Party" by John Heartsman & The Gaylarks (#168) was a single I never listened to. I was a fan of the Jimmy Beasley version that I'd purchased, as a used juke-box forty-five, for 25 cents at Select Music on Vancouver's Commercial Drive. It had hardly been played, laying dormant in whatever British Columbia greasy spoon it had found its way to. Too bad it wasn't in an East End cafe.
The Heartsman version is so much like the Beasley one that I've included it in the chart.
Also, in '59, I was listening to the "A" side of King #5171 and never turned Hank Ballard's "Teardrops On Your Letter" (#189) over to enjoy "The Twist" (#66) until I heard Chubby Checker's near-perfect imitation a year later.

There are no Xmas tunes included here - there is a tabulation "Reiter Record Relics Best Of Xmas -1945 to 1986".

I would like to express my admiration & gratitude to and for;
Bob McGrath's mind-boggling -
"The R&B Indies".
Joel Whitburn's dog-eared and worn -
"Top R&B Singles (Billboard) 1942-1988".
Jerry Osborne's
"Official Price Guide To Records 15th Edition".
Tim Neely's
"Goldmine Third Edition Price Guide To 45rpm Records".
Galen Gart's amazing -
"Final Pressings" Volumes 5 to 9.
Record Collector Magazine's
2002 Rare Record Price Guide.
and a thank you to my mum and later in life to she-who-must-be-obeyed for not throwing out my invaluable and personal "Reiter Record Relics" lists, charts, and surveys compiled between 1955 and 1960.

And so, as they say in show biz, without further ado -

Reflections on '67 - with 1967 Groovin' Blue chart

In 1967, CKLG-AM, the most successful youth radio station in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, printed their year-end survey of top single 45 rpm (7”) releases - “Top 173 – 1967”.
James Brown didn’t appear anywhere on the list.
And while Blues artists Little Milton, Lowell Fulson, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Johnny “Guitar” Watson or Albert King weren’t expected to get air-play on a popular music station, CKLG-AM’s Top 173 also featured no records by Otis Redding, Ray Charles, The Dells, Etta James, Joe Tex, Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Al Green, King Curtis, Freddie Scott, Percy Sledge or Harvey Scales and The Seven Sounds.
The “Top 173” didn’t mention a Soul, Funk, or Rhythm ‘n’ Blues record until one quarter of the way through where, at #43, The Supremes made an appearance with “The Happening”.
Twenty-seven songs later the wonderful “Gimme Little Sign” by Brenton Wood made an appearance. So far, that’s two Black records out of seventy.
In fact, a total of only twenty-three (23) New World African Music 45’s made the CKLG-AM Top 173 in 1967. Although, if you added the pop-ish “Up, Up and Away” and “Go Where You Wanna Go” by The Fifth Dimension there were twenty-five. If you generously included the admittedly funky “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m A Man” by Spencer Davis Group and the Soul Survivors’ “Expressway To Your Heart” there were twenty-eight.
Artist-wise the chart broke down this way – four records by The Supremes, two each by the Four Tops and Aretha Franklin (but not “I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Loved You)” and one each by Brenton Wood, Stevie Wonder, Arthur Conley, Miriam Makeba, Wilson Pickett, (The)Parliament(s), The Four Tops, Jackie Wilson, Bill Cosby, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Roger Collins, the Miracles, Sam & Dave (but not “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby”), and The Esquires (#173). Three 1966 released tunes that received most of their airplay in ’67 – “Tell It Like It Is” by Aaron Neville, J.J. Jackson’s “But It’s Alright” and Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” - were also included in the CKLG-AM 1967 chart.
On the other side of the wall in CKLG’s FM studio, Canada’s first all-genre Black music show - “Groovin’ Blue” - hosted and produced by Bill Reiter, had a 1967 TOP ONE HUNDRED PLUS that echoed the music being listened to on the city's east side and looked like this;
