HEADING TOWARDS 2012 and we thinkin' 'bout ONE OF OUR NEW WORLD AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSICAL HEROES - "THE GENIUS" - Mr. RAY CHARLES in 1968 FRANCE

GROOVIN' BLUE had been on the air from the year earlier on CKLG-FM in VanCity and Bro' Ray was at the peak of his creative heights.
Going into the new year we reminisce about our musical heroes with no one, no one artist, as esteemed as Mr. RAY CHARLES.

Ah.... Yes! A GREAT WAY TO LEAD INTO 2012! ONE of our NEW WORLD AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSICAL HEROES - MR. TONY WILLIAMS with the PLATTERS and "ONLY YOU"

Mr. ZigToTheZag tells us it was the vocal mellifluousness of MR. TONY WILLIAMS that propelled THE PLATTERS baritone lead (fifty years ago) to the DJZZ list of top-three-1950's-voices
but . . .
it seems their was another reason that particular vocal quintet ranked as a pre-teen favourite musical act . . . simply with the addition of Ms. ZOLA TAYLOR. "She was the first Black American woman I had a crush on", confides DJZZ.

And then there was Jeannette "Baby" Washington, we presume ! !
Such a romantic! . . . our awakening 12-year old Canadian lad.

WITH SO MUCH MUSIC by WAGRadio's NEW WORLD AFRICAN MUSICAL HERO BROOK BENTON here's A PHOTO OF THE 'SOUL SANTA' HISSEFF ! ! AND AN XMAS SHOUT-OUT ! !

It is the time of year to thank some of the peeps who contribute to WAGRadio with ideas, encouragement and actual physical help . . .We've already mentioned the 'core-people' like Miss A our Production Manager (her title keeps changin') and Keith White our chief engineer plus our on-air cohort Sunny 'Sweet Daddy Fonk' Wong.
DADDY FONK's 8 retro shows with DJZigZag from the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina & Tennessee in 2010 and his many special broadcasts like the female audience favourite - 'Groovin' Blue Funk Shui Valentine' - have given him STAR STATUS on WAGRadio.
The voices of staff announcers Ted "Teddy Bear" Bishop and
Blu "King" Mankuma are invaluable.
Web-artiste extraordinaire Ms. Amanda McRoberts (she designed the station's logo and the DJZZ caricature)
is another SUPER INVALUABLE STAR contributor
as is YouTube advisor/co-producer JasMan (Jason Vanderhill).
We've also acknowledged Bermudian-Brit Kenny 'Mr. Brushes' Harris and Hawaiian-Canadian Dennis Jang and Turkistan-Laplander (Capn') Morgan Tanner.
All three are there to offer video and musical advice and criticism (especially young Tanner).
We must applaud our off-site help too. Thanks for the expertise of legendary Co-Op radio show host/producer Ron "Blues In The Dark" Simmonds, Reel-Radio contributor Jon E. Pearkins, musicologist Ari Anas and to these stalwarts; Chapter book stores' guru Glenn McDonald (who we suggest you visit at the Pinetree Village mall (Coquitlam, B.C.), Radio West's Ted Wendland with Northwest Broadcasters and Vancouver Broadcasters Editor/Webmaster Gord Lansdell and B.C. Radio History's Jack Bennest. They're always available when asked for that expert advice.
Mike 'East End Kingada Blues' Cvetkovich and Sam 'Chubby' Hayes are still mentoring DJZZ (and therefore us) with ideas and inspiration.

Add to the list; Red Robinson, "Big Daddy" Dave McCormick, DJ Physik, Sipreano & Kevin Howes, Rico Uno, Jay Swing, Globe & Mail's Tom Hawthorn, Anna McRoberts, Rhysha girl, George Balkovec, Brian Antonson & Bruce Atkinson, Jules Andre-Brown, Henri Brown, U. of Victoria's Marnie Coulter, Garret Louie, Tony Burke, Vince Mai, Al "Mr. Big" Foreman, Stephen Bucek & Stu Bevnick, Ian James Corlett, Richard Dal Monte, SeaBear, Jaayda Wong Dinglasen, DJ Kemo, Richard Liukko, Brian Forst, R&B Indies' Bob McGrath, zipDJ's Kevin Unger, Cilla Huggins, Don "Mr. Soul" Gerrard, John Mackie, Rock 101's 'Bro' Jake' Edwards, Sammy Lau, Phil MacKesy, Miles Hill, Chum-Radio's Mike Occomore, Dickson Loo, Russell Pangborn, Drew Snider, Henry & Yvonne Young, Bill Dulmage, Eric LeBlanc, Tom Jeffries, Flipout, DJ Clarence, Fat Back Caine's Lou Crockett, Alex Usow, Jim Conrad, Mr. Rumble, Sky Radio's Mike Cherry, Don Chessa, Paul DeBarros, Joani Taylor, Rice Honeywell, Mike & Jamie @ Apollo Music, Tara McGuire, Judy Graham, Atrain Boynton, April Thelwell, Gabor Gasztonyi, Neptoon's Rob Frith, Al 'CJAZ' Shimokura, Todd Hancock, David Cole, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach, Miles Ramsay, Mike Zafiris, Jonathan Rowthorn, SouLMateS' Kentish Steele, "Jolly John" Tanner, EBBA REITER and many other loyal fans and listeners who we can also ask advice from - making them all the more valuable to WAGRadio.
We know we've forgotten somebody and say we are sorry our memory failed us.
It's trite . . . but YOU know who you are and we ask you to mentally add yourself to the thank you list!
Through the New World African Music of Soul Santa - WAGRadio wishes all y'all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy, healthy IRIE New Year ! !

REELRADIO HOLIDAY SPECIAL

. . . as we like to say to the hop-hippers . . .

[Description by contributor Jon Pearkins]

Picture of

Right: Sweet Daddy Fonk (Sunny Wong)
The 2011 REELRADIO Holiday Presentation of this aircheck marks the tenth anniversary of the CHMBbroadcast on December 9, 2001. There were some parts missing in the original recording, so a few segments from the December 2, 2001 show were merged into this exhibit.

Bill Reiter's impact on Vancouver radio is substantial. His voice is still heard most days on the radio as far away as Edmonton, Alberta. This special All Christmas, All The Time show is a continuation of his franchise Groovin' Blue show, featuring "New World African Music", comprised of "Jazz, Soul, Funk, R&B, Reggae, Blues and Gospel".

Groovin' Blue, produced and hosted by Bill Reiter, first aired on Vancouver radio station CKLG-FM in October, 1967. CKLG management wanted to air a unique program that echoed the type originally hosted in San Francisco by Russ "The Moose" Syracuse on KYA's "All Night Flight". AM 1320 CHMB LogoSince that original show, the Groovin' Blueformat has aired on other Vancouver radio stations including CKST-FM (Coast 1040), CJVB-AM/1470, and CHMB-AM/1320.

For this special Holiday show, Bill is DJ Zig Zag, and his co-host Sunny Wong appears asSweet Daddy Fonk. Sunny never worked in radio, other than with Bill. One promo that includes short clips from Wolfman Jack on XERB and Art Laboe offers a clue for Reiter's influences. He dedicates a song to the incarcerated ("things are bad, but they could be worse") and tells a story about receiving a Rooty Toot for a Christmas present.

2nd WAGRadio - GROOVIN' BLUE CHRISTMAS SHOW IS POSTED . . . SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING BLUE, SOMETHING BORROWED FROM POP & a COUPLA' NU CHOONS 2 . .

AFTER a FEW YEARS of being lovingly/ruthlessly COPIED by Popular Music Artists (it usually takes 25 years) SOME NEW WORLD AFRICAN MUSIC can also sound 'POPish' to the ear - as the pictured album by The Soulful Strings . . .
but IF YOU'RE WONDERIN' WHAT 'POP' was MIXED INTO 'GROOVIN' BLUE XMAS 2011 #2' . . . LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE artistically technical RCA Recording VOCAL GROUP from THE 1970's CALLED 'LIVING VOICES' . . .
DJZigZag USED THEM AS A MELODIC MIDDLE-OF-THE-ROAD intro TO WILLIAM BELL's 60's 6LAB 0'6TAX 60UL . . .
"Everyday Seems Like A Holiday" (oh, those opening guitar sounds !)
THIS 2nd GROOVIN' BLUE 2011 CHRISTMAS SHOW IS GONNA SET you a-fire and put you in THE MERRIEST OF MOODS as YOU SIT reflectively . . .
watchin' your Yule log a'burnin' . . .
Ha, Ha, Ho, Ho, Ha !
MERRY CHRISTMAS, once again, FROM ALL OF US HERE AT WAGRadio

WAGRadio's Christmas - "CHRISTMAS IN THE GHETTO" features that 1965 45rpm by "BIG" DADDY RUCKER - from the WAGRadio VIDEO COLLECTION

Sweet Daddy Fonk & DJZigZag were moved by the starkness of the Historic College Hill Courts when they visited Chattanooga, TN. in October of 2010.
With so many middle-class Americans of African descent losing their homes and jobs, the juxtaposition of the 1965 single by "Big" Daddy Rucker with the video's view of the housing development administered by CARTA (the Chattanooga Regional Transportation Authority) didn't seem too far away from today's reality.
