FEB. 18-20, 2011 at the FIREHALL ARTS CENTRE (280 E. Cordova St.) - "EAST END BLUES and ALL THAT JAZZ" starring THELMA AND CHIC GIBSON

Ya got ta' go and hear two of our finest gospel and blues singers in EAST END BLUES and ALL THAT JAZZ at the FIREHALL ARTS CENTRE from FEBRUARY 18th to the 20th ! !

This BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE AND TIMES of EAST VANCOUVER'S HISTORIC BLACK NEIGHBOURHOOD (where SWEET DADDY FONK grew up ! !) is a tribute to the contributions that Black Canadians have made, and continue to make, to the cultural and social fabric of our city.

We are gonna take a musical tour walkin' down memory lane to the Fountain Chapel - heart and soul of the historic community. We will jump, jive and hurt ourselves at Ernie King's Harlem Nocturne. We will wave at Mrs. Wong (Sweet Daddy's moms) just before we cross the alley from his house and drop in on Vie's Chicken and Steak House and the Country Club. That's all centred at Hogan's Alley - bulldozed when they built the Georgia Viaduct in the early '70's.

Sweet Daddy and I always looked longingly (with Mr. Wong looking a little longer) at the beautiful sister of our pal Sy Risby. Well, that sister - Ms. Thelma Gibson - along with brother Chic danced and sang at the Gibson family's the Country Club along with their older brother Len. As a matter of fact, there wasn't a club in Van-City's East End that didn't know the name and herald the talent of the three Gibson siblings be it the Smilin' Buddha, the Mandarin Gardens, the legendary Harlem Nocturne etc, etc.

Along with the Gibsons, "East End Blues and All That Jazz" has the aforementioned dynamic talent of one Ms. CANDUS CHURCHILL (a longtime listener to WAGRadio, we have to add) plus equally talented TOM PICKETT. Rounding out the musical peeps are pianist/musical director BILL COSTLIN & bass player TIMOTHY STACEY.

THIS IS A SOULFUL EVENING OF GOSPEL, BLUES, JAZZ AND NEW WORLD AFRICAN MUSICAL VANCOUVER MEMORIES that was created by the late great DENIS SIMPSON and Vancouver Moving Theatre's SAVANNAH WALLING, assisted by brother LEONARD GIBSON with contributions by CHIC and THELMA GIBSON.

Y'all should be at the FIREHALL ARTS CENTRE AT 8:00 P.M. on one of the TWO NIGHTS
FEBRUARY 18th & 19th
OR the SUNDAY AFTERNOON MATINEE at 2:00pm ! ! !

Tickets: $20.00 / $15.00 for students and seniors
Box Office: 604.689.0926
